3D scanner usually output "point cloud" data, which records the surface of objects as three-dimensional coordinate. Point clouds and polygon data could be interconverted by connecting vertices to produce triangles or export the vertices of triangles. The polygon data is made of triangles sharing edges and is know as having STL file format.
3D scanner does not necessarily reproduce the original shape of the objects as polygon data consisting of triangles. The polygon often contains abnormal triangles whose vertices are incorrectly connected or torn. Healing is a process to fix these flaws to create acceptable polygon data.
Optimization of the shape of polygon data
The size of data could be too large if high-resolution 3D measurement is conducted. It is desirable to reduce the size of the data while keeping the overall shape of the polygon data.
